MARINOS KOUTSOMICHALIS
ABOUT
Marinos Koutsomichalis (Athens, Greece, 1981), composer, sound-artist.
In his early works, he has experimented with various genres and styles, ranging from electroacoustic music and algorithmic composition to contemporary classical, environmental recordings or even harsh noise. His sole purpose was expression completely freed from formalistic restrictions and boundaries of any kind. Those years involved, though, his approach changed radically.
What mainly his research and solo work deals with now, is not structure nor procedures, but timbre and texture. He perceives sound as a self-evident experience, freed from causality, formalism and directionality of any kind, thus he only focuses on the characteristics and qualities of site-specific sonic occupation (or on medium-oriented interpretations of those ideas.). Expression is not his purpose anymore, he prefers letting sound guiding him, seeking architectural potentials in sonic occupation, and ways to dominate (or interact with) the performance space. Sometimes this means aggressively invading the space with noises, sometimes trying to find his own pathway amongst fragile textures or found sounds, sometimes both, sometimes none...
When scoring for humans, his interest still lies on the textural possibilities of solo instruments or small ensembles, sometimes overwhelming "musicality" or "musical references", sometimes not. His objective (as already stated) is not expression but a self-evident sonic occupation of space, thus, even if in his scores performers are usually asked to take initiatives or execute difficult mechanical tasks, this aims not on transcendence but on ensemble-(or site-)specific fine-tuning of his work and to facilitate or obscure (!) the "performance" of his works.
Meanwhile, he deals with various other side-projects and experiments in various ways, he even sometimes work within a "fixed media" or algorithmic context, when he feels he needs to do something different, but usually his work is somehow related to space, timbre or improvisation. With Soundwalks, for example, tries to sonically interpret his surroundings, with |cHro(m)A|, immobility, and with various cooperations, the concept of on-the-spot free improvisation...
His work has been performed and presented in Europe and America. He also runs a small company in Greece that organizes cultural and educational events, workshops and gigs.
